The Westin is part of a large complex with conference center and flower park build by star architect Tadao Ando as a stimulus for the area after the 1995 earthquake in Kobe prefecture.
This commission was for the lobby entrance, it took a year of correspondence and three weeks for assembly plus one week to install.
The original concept was “tealeaves” arranged like swallows clustered at the top, some falling down to make the installation more interesting. I introduced a kinetic element and installed three timers, one on each façade, each timer had a green coloured plexiglass shape attached two moved counterclockwise one moved clockwise. The intervals between rotations varied from 45 seconds to 3 hours.
